Report: Ex-Bellator Fighter Shahbulat Shamhalaev Shot in Restaurant Altercation

Onetime Bellator MMA featherweight Shahbulat Shamhalaev was hospitalized on Wednesday after reportedly being shot multiple times in Makhachkala, Russia.

According to a report from, Shamhalaev was in intensive care and underwent surgery to have a kidney removed after being shot “several times” with a firearm at a restaurant in the area. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan press service confirmed the incident occurred but information regarding the assailants and other potential victims was not available.

In surveillance footage posted on, several attackers appear to enter the restaurant and fire off multiple gunshots before leaving the scene. Shamhalaev is not clearly visible in the video.

Shamhalaev, 32, compiled a 3-2 record with Bellator from 2012 to 2014. He last competed at Bellator 120, where he suffered a first-round submission loss to Fabricio de Assis Costa da Silva. He was 12-3-1 over the course of his professional career, notably losing to UFC contender Khabib Nurmagomedov at an M-1 Challenge event in 2009.
